Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement: The Santa Ana Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Clopay-compatible cable and drum assemblies for most residential models in Santa Ana, with typical installed pricing between $130 and $250. Most cable and drum replacements are completed same-day because we carry the common sizes on every truck. Homeowners usually discover the problem when the door hangs crooked, won’t stay on track, or one side lifts faster than the other - often after hearing a sharp bang from the garage.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay has used several drum designs across their product lines, and matching the right one matters. The Classic Collection, Gallery Collection, and Avante series each specify different drum diameters and cable lengths based on door height and track radius. A 7-foot door on standard radius track takes a different drum than an 8-foot door on low-headroom hardware. The part number is usually stamped on the drum itself, or you can find it on the sticker inside the top section of the door.

We carry both OEM Clopay drums and quality aftermarket equivalents from DURA-LIFT and Prime-Line. For most Santa Ana homes built between 1985 and 2010, the aftermarket option performs identically at a lower parts cost. The exception is Clopay’s newer Intellicore and WindCode doors, which use proprietary drum geometry that aftermarket suppliers haven’t fully replicated. If your door sees heavy Santa Ana wind loading, we typically recommend the OEM drum for exact balance.

Carl Dutton checks drum wall thickness with a caliper on every job. A 0.050-inch wall drum will outlast a 0.035-inch unit by years in this climate, and we don’t install the thinner spec.

Signs Your Clopay Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing

  • The door sits crooked when closed. One cable has stretched or slipped off its drum, so that side of the door hangs lower. The uneven weight starts bending the bottom fixture and makes the problem worse every cycle.
  • A loud bang or snap from the garage, then the door won’t move. This is usually a cable breaking under tension. Clopay cables in Santa Ana’s dry heat tend to corrode from the inside out where they wrap around the drum, so the failure often looks sudden even though rust has been working for months.
  • The door rises faster on one side and binds in the track. The drum’s gripping surface has worn smooth, letting the cable slip. On Clopay’s older stamped-steel drums, this happens after roughly 12,000 to 15,000 cycles in normal use.
  • Cable frays visible near the bottom bracket or drum. Any fraying means the cable is past due. A Clopay 7×19 strand cable with three or more broken outer wires should be replaced before it parts completely.
  • The drum wobbles or the cable stacks unevenly. Drum bearings seize from dust and lack of lubrication, common in Santa Ana’s dusty late-summer conditions. Once the drum doesn’t spin true, the cable walks off the groove and damages the door sections.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range in Santa Ana
Cable & Drum Replacement (standard residential) $130 - $250
Cable-only replacement (drums reusable) $130 - $190
Drum-only replacement (cables reusable) $150 - $220
Bottom bracket replacement (if damaged) $40 - $80 additional

The $130-$250 range covers parts, labor, and disposal of the old hardware. A standard 16×7 Clopay door on 12-inch radius track with two worn drums and corroded cables lands near the middle. If we find a bent bottom bracket or damaged flag angle from the cable snapping, we’ll show you before adding anything to the bill.

We state the flat price before turning a wrench. That’s been our way since 1984. Every cable and drum job carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the door doesn’t run true, we come back. No paperwork to file, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can inspect the cables for fraying, check that both drums spin freely by hand with the door down and the opener disconnected, and verify the door is level when closed. Take a photo of any part number you find. That information saves time when you call.

But replacing the cable itself is not a homeowner job. The torsion spring above the door holds lethal tension. Even with the spring unwound, a slip during cable threading can recoil the hardware with force enough to break bone. We’ve responded to three Santa Ana homes in Floral Park alone where a well-meaning owner made the damage worse and added an ER visit.

Our trucks carry Clopay-compatible drums, cables, and bottom brackets. Most cable and drum replacements in Santa Ana finish in under 90 minutes, one visit, with the door running smooth before we leave. Call (562) 245-4879 and tell me what it’s doing. I’ll tell you what it needs.
